I agree with most people in Erie that it's time to start treating, and taxing these colleges like the thriving businesses they are. Tuition is spiraling out of control at some of these institutions.

The simple solution would be to send a HUGE bill to any of these colleges when they use our fire or police services.

Never going to happen unfortunately. colleges just like hospitals, churches, social service agencies, and many other organizations called non-profit they are exempt from having to pay taxes by federal and state laws. We all pay for them through our tax dollars...

It is a shame that non-profit does not really mean non-profit. There must be some way these tax-exempt organizations can contribute to the local economy without being coerced.
